♥ Thirsty for fan-fictions

I have a really long and developing reading list at the moment. I just can't stop reading them and finishing them and also finding new ones. And did you know what I'm currently reading, what fills up my unending reading list for the past six months? Yunjae. Yes. YUNJAE, the well-known yaoi, boyxboy, gay, forbidden love relationship etc stories. omg I can't believe I just admitted this out loud on my own blog where absolutely anyone could read. But... you just have to admit, no other fanfic authors out there could write angsty/fluffy love stories better than those Yunjae authors. Funny right?

Let me clear up something before I get on with this post. I am a Muslim. Islam has well taught us that intimate relationships with persons of the same gender, no matter where you stand on this Earth, are FORBIDDEN. Humans are gracefully created by God in pairs, of men and women. To explain this in more depth will definitely divert my initial intention of writing this post. So for now, just know that anything gay is forbidden in my religion (but of course there's that other meaning of gay according to the dictionary which doesn't relate to today's topic). And yet, I'm reading these gay stuff... GASP!!

Don't get me wrong. I definitely do NOT support gay marriage/relationships whatsoever in the real world. And I most definitely do NOT ship Yunjae. I won't stop everyone else though, the right belongs solely to you. You can ship Yunjae all you want as long as everyone is happy :)

When I'm finding a fanfiction to read, there are several important factors that I will consider:

i) grammar and structure. I bet most of fanfic readers out there would pay really close attention to these. They might not emphasize so much on the sentence structures (but I do!) and would consider a simple fiction with good grammar as good enough to give it a try. But for me, as soon as I come across a fiction, be it a gay fiction or normal ones, I'd skip to the middle chapters and skim through the words roughly to get the general idea of the quality I'm looking for. The summary also plays an important point because an eye-catching summary would most probably mean  that the story owns a pretty good structure, and what's left for me to hope for is that the story will be able to move me emotionally.

ii) graphics. I won't necessarily demand that fictions have their own graphics before I read them. What I mean is that an eye-catching graphic will most definitely draw me in to read the story. My logic is that, if the story isn't very good, a skilled graphic designer wouldn't agree to create a poster/banner for the story. I would say that they aren't able to get any inspiration at all from the parts that have already been written, and non-inspiring stories are dull in my books. And when I say an eye-catching graphic, it doesn't necessarily mean graphics with lots of awesome elements present on them. I'd rather the graphics be simple, but able to speak volumes. By looking at the graphics themselves, you can already see the overview of what the author has in store for you.

iii) character development and details. As a writer myself, it has always been difficult for me to develop my characters. I tried plenty of times, but when I do develop something, it will always be the plot and almost nothing else. Well, a developing plot is good, of course. But that's a given. All other authors will have to develop their plots in order to make the story. Though, without character development, readers will feel pretty much detached from the storyline and its implied emotions. I've found out that these sorts of details are what provides the subtleness and flavour to the whole creation. It should be able to make me cry buckets of tears with each passing sentence!

I've been around the fanfic world longer that what I gave myself credit for. Fanfic sites appeared and gone and I'm still roaming around, fishing for new stories to read. I've always been in awe whenever I come across awesome authors with awesome stories. Most of those I've came across with should've printed their stories in paperbacks and make profit out of their talents! But as time passed by, these awesome authors got too caught up with their own real life and soon become unable to update anymore of their stories. A lot of the stories I've subscribe to had been left hanging and it's already been years since their last updates (I don't read yaoi at all before these recent 6 months). And when these awesome flock is gone, came new ones of course, in a way eager to continue on the legacy. However, these hormonal teenagers of the new flock were too wishful and began to write nonsense to their hearts' content. They think they're writing fanfics, but to me what they're writing were more of their own self-centered day-dreams. =_=; And so there were less and less normal fics to read for me to satisfy my craves as the months went on. I spent a whole year searching and searching, and when I found something I could be considered VERY lucky.

And at this point I got fed up. I can't remember how I ended up in livejournal after that, but I did. And this is where I was able to meet more awesome authors who could actually write and do not base their stories solely on daydreams and imaginations. And as you can already guess, these authors write YUNJAE. I was able to find awesome normal fics communities at first, but I have no idea why updates became slower and slower as the days go by, and at this point I think it has stopped all together. It's utterly disappointing. SO I have no other choice but to turn to these Yunjae communities where updates were flowing like waterfall. At least I won't run out of fanfic supplies. I know they consist of gay love, and most of them contain gay smut and all that, but I'm a big girl and I know what my priorities are when I read them, which are awesome love stories with the 3 criteria specified above. When I read Yunjae, what I picture in my head aren't necessarily two guys loving each other. I am more interested in engulfing myself within the words and in letting my heart be carried away into another world of romance and destined love (or otherwise, doesn't matter) conveyed beautifully by the author using equally beautiful words. It's all literature to me yawwww~

Maybe I should just find regular fictions to read from now on, yeah? But I like it when I know exactly how the characters look like! And using their real names helps my imagination by a LOT and will allow me to focus on other more important elements of the writing other than the physical appearance of the characters. xD
